Portland’s Hollywood district isn’t home to any movie stars. The area was originally known as “Hollyrood,” after a neighborhood in Scotland until 1926. When the grand Hollywood Theatre on Northeast Sandy Boulevard opened, it was then renamed “Hollywood.”  Homes in Hollywood are usually Craftsman, Cottage, Cape Cod, and Bungalows.

There are a number of condos in Hollywood, some new and others that have been converted from apartment buildings. The Hollywood neighborhood is a mix of commercial and residential space and provides shopping for many of the surrounding neighborhoods such as Grant Park and Laurelhurst, as well as to riders of the MAX Light Rail System.Image title

Hollywood also figures in Beverly Cleary’s Klickitat Street series of books, a fact memorialized in a display at the neighborhood library. Details on a Beverly Cleary walking tour “Walking with Ramona” are available at the library. The tour begins at the Hollywood Neighborhood Library, 4040 N.E. Tillamook Street, and continues through nearby neighborhoods, exploring the places where the events in her books “really happened.”  Also, one of the few year-round farmer’s markets can be found in Hollywood. The Hollywood Farmers Market comes alive every Saturday from May until Thanksgiving, and twice a month during the winter, with over 50 vendors plus community booths, musicians, volunteers and neighbors.

If you love a good deal or a vintage find, shopping the thrift and vintage stores in Hollywood will make your day. Start at Hollywood Babylon, where you can find awesome goodies including 1940s dresses all the way up to 1980s concert t-shirts. Then check out I Heart Retro, and you will feel like you walked right into an episode of Mad Men.  They have retro items like furniture, kitchen appliances, typewriters and jewelry. If you are in need of some mommy or baby gear, stop in Zanzibar to get clothes and toys. If all that nostalgia left you thirsty, grab a root beer float at the old fashioned soda fountain counter in Paulson’s Pharmacy.
