If you have bought a new home you might be in the market for new furniture and home decor. Portland has many resources available to those who want to make their new home comfortable, stylish and personal. Even when you love your furniture and decor, it might not work well with your new place.

The size and scale of furniture is critical for a room to look great and function well.  Furniture bought for a dainty Queen Anne style home might look like doll’s furniture in a modern great room!  A sectional sized for a modern great room might use up all the floor space in a 1970’s ranch.  You don’t have to give up your personal style, but your furniture needs to fit the space so that you will be comfortable.

Full Service

There are many full service furniture and decor stores in Portland.  These stores are a great resource.  Many of them have design specialists on staff that can help you choose correctly sized pieces for your new rooms.  Be sure to bring measurements of your rooms!  Photos help too.  It is crucial that you measure doorways and hallways so that you know that you will be able to bring the furniture in the house!

Most national furniture and decor stores have a location in Portland.  This includes : Mitchell * Gold, Design within Reach, Williams*Sonoma Home, Pottery Barn, Crate and Barrel, Ethan Allen, Dania,West Elm and CB2.

Consignment Stores

Consignment stores sell gently used furnishings.  Each store has their own quality guidelines.  You won’t find damaged, smelly items.  All items should be a quality that you can just move in to your house.  Staff is happy to help you measure items and delivery is available at an extra charge.  The big advantage is that you can surf the web daily and see what new pieces the stores have. What’s New Furniture (www.whatsnewfurniture.com) sells gently used pieces and can have custom work completed locally.  Two of the largest consignment shops are Consignment Northwest, (www.consignment-nw.com) and Upscale Consignment (upscaleconsignment.com).

Antique Stores / Malls

The large antique stores have something for everyone.  Mid Century Modern ?  Check.  Victorian or Eastlake ? Industrial?  Vintage farmwares? Check.  You can easily spend an entire day browsing.  You’ll find everything from vintage linens and lighting to teddy bears.  Monticello Antiques, (www.monticelloantiques.com) even has it’s own cafe for lunch or breakfast!  Stars Antiques Mall, (www.starsantique.com) is another enormous venue with over 200 vendors. They have a great website where you can view items by category or vendor.

The mix of stores in Portland has everything you need to create a space that is uniquely yours. Remember to take your measurements with you while you shop!  Enjoy yourself as you put the finishing touches on your new home.
