North Portland is home to the historic Kenton / Arbor Lodge neighborhood. Kenton was designed as a company town for the Swift Meat Packing Company. Denver Avenue was the “main” street where wealthy business owners built large homes. Smaller homes were built on the West side for the workers. With a location close to the Stock Yards, this land was important to the Oregon cattle business. The city grew with the rise of the meat packing business. From the 1890’s thru the 1920’s cattle drives thru town were a regular occurrence! The area boasted many manufacturing plants with it’s close location to land, rail and river transportation.
The Kenton neighborhood lies West of I-5 and North of North Lombard Street. Arbor Lodge is the adjacent neighborhood directly South. Arbor Lodge is primarily residential. Many shops and restaurants are located along North Denver Avenue or North Interstate Ave.
Today, the Historic Kenton Firehouse is a reminder of Kenton’s past and future. The firehouse was dedicated in 1913. Although, not an active fire station, the building provides office space for several community organizations. Structurally, it has been transformed into an outstanding example of energy efficiency. There are solar panels on the roof that provide more than enough electricity for the building. Indoor fixtures are low energy, low water usage models. The exterior of the building features a habitat garden and permeable brick paving. ( 8105 North Brandon Avenue ).
